Introduction
Human hair extensions are an investment, and with the right care they can last 12 months or more. Unlike synthetic hair, human hair extensions can be washed, heat-styled, and treated much like your own hair — but they do need a little extra attention since they no longer receive natural oils from the scalp. This guide covers everything you need to keep your extensions looking lush and healthy for as long as possible.
Washing Your Extensions
Wash your extensions every 1–2 weeks, or whenever there is significant product buildup. Over-washing strips moisture and shortens their lifespan.
- Use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are harsh detergents that cause extensions to dry out and tangle faster.
- Wash in a downward motion. Never scrub or pile the hair on top of your head — always work from roots to ends to prevent tangling.
- Rinse with cool water. Cool water seals the cuticle and adds shine.
- Condition every wash. Apply a moisturizing conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Leave it on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing.
Drying Your Extensions
Always handle wet extensions gently — this is when they are most vulnerable to breakage.
- Gently squeeze (never wring) excess water from the hair with a soft towel.
- Allow extensions to air dry when possible. If you must use a blow dryer, use the cool or low-heat setting and a heat protectant spray.
- Never sleep with wet extensions — this causes matting and mildew, especially with sew-ins.
Detangling
Tangles are the number one enemy of long-lasting extensions. Make detangling part of your daily routine.
- Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft boar-bristle brush.
- Always start from the ends and work your way up to the roots — never pull from the top down.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray before brushing to reduce friction.
- Detangle gently before and after every wash.
Heat Styling
One of the biggest advantages of human hair extensions is that they can be heat-styled. But repeated high heat will dry them out over time.
- Always use a heat protectant before applying any heat tool.
- Keep flat irons and curling wands at or below 350°F (175°C) for daily styling.
- Avoid applying heat directly to attachment points (bonds, tapes, or wefts) to prevent loosening.
- Give your extensions a break from heat styling when possible.
Nighttime Care
How you sleep matters just as much as how you style. A little nighttime prep goes a long way.
- Braid or loosely tie extensions in a low ponytail or bun before bed to prevent tangling.
- Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, or wear a satin bonnet. Cotton pillowcases create friction that causes frizz and matting.
- Never sleep with clip-in extensions in — always remove them before bed.
Moisturizing and Deep Conditioning
Because extensions don't receive natural scalp oils, they need regular moisture to stay soft and shiny.
- Apply a small amount of argan oil or hair serum to the mid-lengths and ends 2–3 times per week.
- Deep condition every 2–4 weeks using a moisturizing hair mask. Apply, cover with a shower cap, leave for 20–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- Avoid applying heavy oils or products near the roots or attachment points, as this can loosen bonds or cause slippage.
General Tips to Extend Lifespan
- Avoid chlorinated pool water and saltwater — both are very drying. If you swim, wear a swim cap or wet the extensions with clean water first and apply conditioner before exposure.
- Protect extensions from prolonged sun exposure, which fades color and dries out the hair.
- Have a professional re-tighten or reapply extensions every 6–8 weeks as your natural hair grows.
